Do you scald your mixture before you freeze it?

Back when I used to make my own, I just mixed everything together then ran it through the ice cream machine.
Then my mother showed me that if you cook (scald) the mixture before you run it through the ice cream machine, it is more rich and "custardy".
The best way is with a double boiler to keep from burning it.
If you've never done it that way, try it.
