I wrote a single digit number on the last census in bold black marker so there would be no mistake = "2". The section which outlined the bare legal minimum was shaded in a different color, incidentally.
When the liberal old woman showed up at my gate a month later to ask why I didn't fill out the whole form, I said, "2 people live here." As she asked more and more depth of questions while writing on her clipboard, I said, "3 people live here." and so forth.
She got the message by the time we got to 5 people living here.
I don't see any value in reporting my household income or other private information - as genealogy research isn't going to need that to link me to relatives, only to pry into my life and my wallet even further.
