I heard them, but I want them to restate their challenge to determine their level of dedication.

I also make the inquiry as I close the distance. It makes an impression. They never fail to indicate retreat.

At 6'1" and 240, they tend not to say anything to me - and I am a kind man. But if they do and think they are clever - I instruct them on old bull, young bull.

They are not dedicated to anything without a group. Even then, they are cowards.

In this case, I'd have said something like, "It commemorates the deaths of men who were not prepared to fight" and walked on.

Tends to curb their enthusiasm.
