What to do about a glutenous squirrel...

So I got a Moultrie tree mounted deer feeder for the yard so my woman could watch the deer from the comfort of the den. The first filling lasted over a month. The second time I filled it a squirrel discovered it. I don't know how much he's eaten but he's scooped all of it out on the ground. He also appears to be quite portly. I don't mind the birds scavenging the bits that fall to the ground but this asshole of a rodent has emptied the feeder in less than a week. I could easily dispatch him with an air rifle or .22 but was wondering if there was a less lethal means of putting him on a diet. Anyone else have experience with deer feeder raiders?
